Welcome to Michael Murphy Artist.
Michael’s artistic career
began in 1982 attending night school courses in graphic design and photography.
After leaving school Michael worked at a commercial printers carrying out
design and reprographic work. In 1997 Michael began work in education,
supporting creative events and activities until 2013 when he enrolled on a
Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the Scarborough School of Arts. After
completing the diploma Michael stayed on gaining a BA (hons) in Fine Art.
Primarily a landscape artist Michael’s early work was influenced by
political events, mainly the war in Syria. His more recent work is inspired by
the coastal areas of his home town of Scarborough, Michael finds the coastline an
immersive experience, especially during the winter months. Michael photographs the
coastline, the results of which form the raw material of his work.
